Long Weekend Tips for Staying Hydrated

A long weekend, and particularly the first one of the summer, is often the first chance many people have had to come out of the cold and into the warmth of the summer sun.

Every year people overdo on activities and end up feeling terrible after the weekend is over. Too much strenuous exercise, whether it is on the golf course, running, hiking or spending hours in the garden, can cause us to become dehydrated without even realizing we are thirsty.

Thirst is never a good indicator of your body's need for water. The conventional wisdom is to drink 8 ounces of water a day - more if you are a larger than average person or are physically active.

Plus, if you consume any alcohol the liver needs another 8 ounces of water to remove every one ounce of alcohol from your body.

If you're planning on being active this weekend here are some tips to keep in mind to be sure you have enough water for your body to funtion properly:

Drink before you feel thirsty. Keep sipping water constantly throughout the day.

Watch for signs of dehydration, including fatigue, headache, nausea, and light-headedness.

Drink approximately two cups of water in the two hours before exercising, then drink an additional 1/2–3/4 cups for every 15 minutes of activity.

Water is the best fluid for staying hydrated during exercise sessions of less than one hour. For longer sessions, carbohydrate solutions can be helpful.

Have a great long weekend

Is Your Business Spending Too Much for Water?

Is your business spending money buying bottled water for the office water cooler only to have it sit around empty most of the time because no one seems to want to be the one to refill it with those awkward, heavy bottles of water?

Did you also know that those water coolers could be contaminated with micro organisms that could be making your staff sick? Every bottle of water that's placed on the cooler has the potential to introduce bacteria - and bacteria thrives in water!

There's a simple solution to the problem of providing clean drinking water for your staff, keeping them healthy and saving money too!

By installing a water cooler that filters your tap water, you not only provide pure, clean hot or cold water for your staff; keeping them from getting sick plus you save money. Your water costs will be next to nothing compared with the $6 a bottle you're paying for bottled water.

These units can be connected directly to a water line or filled with tap water with a pitcher if no water line is available. Prices start at just $495. A cost that the average office will recoup in about 6 months when you're no longer buying bottles of water - no to mention any loss of productivity caused by sick employees.

Don't you think it's worth looking at Crystal Quest's money saving water filters for the office?

As my grandmother used to say, "a penny saved is a penny earned".

Why Does Bottled Water Taste Better Than Tap Water?

Have you ever wondered what it is about bottled water that makes it so popular? Of course, the convenience factor is a big one but many people also say that bottled water tastes so much better than their tap water.

So why is that? What makes bottled water taste better - even better than filtered water from your kitchen faucet?

Minerals! Many bottled water companies, at least those most successful ones, use a water filtration process that removes contamination and minerals from the water. Then, they add some of those minerals back into the water, in certain quantities, to provide "taste".

For instance, Zephyrhills® Natural Spring Water tells us "A light blend of minerals contributes to the legendary great taste of our water". Those minerals are:

Bicarbonate 140.0 milligrams/liter
Chloride 11.0 milligrams/liter
Fluoride 0.2 milligrams/liter
Sulfate 8.0 milligrams/liter
Calcium 58.0 milligrams/liter
Magnesium 3.9 milligrams/liter
Potassium 0.2 milligrams/liter
Sodium 5.1 milligrams/liter

So now you know why bottled water tastes great - because the companies who sell it have engineered it to taste just the way you like it.

Are You at Risk for Arsenic Poisoning From Drinking Water?

We've all heard about about arsenic being used as a very popular poison throughout history. It's the method of murder in many a mystery book and movie.

Arsenic is the perfect poison - it's tasteless, odorless and colorless. There is nothing to alert the unfortunate victim that he is injesting a poison that will have them buckled over in pain in minutes and dead shortly after that.

But that's all in the movies, right? Well, maybe. Arsenic is a naturally occuring substance in the soil in many parts of the world so low dose arsenic could be in the water you drink each and every day.

According to the US EPA, arsenic "non-cancer effects can include thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; numbness in hands and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness. Arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal passages, liver, and prostate".

You can find out if you live in an area with naturally high amounts of arsenic in the soil from the Arsenic Contamination Hotspots Map.

Although that's all relatively bad news, the good news is that for less than $50 a good quality home water filter can removed up to 99% of the arsenic in your drinking water - so goodbye low level arsenic poisoning and the elevated risk of cancers and skin problems associated with it.

Know what you're drinking and stay healthy!
