Are You at Risk for Arsenic Poisoning From Drinking Water?
We've all heard about about arsenic being used as a very popular poison throughout history. It's the method of murder in many a mystery book and movie.
Arsenic is the perfect poison - it's tasteless, odorless and colorless. There is nothing to alert the unfortunate victim that he is injesting a poison that will have them buckled over in pain in minutes and dead shortly after that.
But that's all in the movies, right? Well, maybe. Arsenic is a naturally occuring substance in the soil in many parts of the world so low dose arsenic could be in the water you drink each and every day.
According to the US EPA, arsenic "non-cancer effects can include thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; numbness in hands and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness. Arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal passages, liver, and prostate".
You can find out if you live in an area with naturally high amounts of arsenic in the soil from the Arsenic Contamination Hotspots Map.
Although that's all relatively bad news, the good news is that for less than $50 a good quality home water filter can removed up to 99% of the arsenic in your drinking water - so goodbye low level arsenic poisoning and the elevated risk of cancers and skin problems associated with it.
